■ 오늘의 주제: 오리아나(Orianna)​​

There once was a Piltovian man named Corin Reveck who had a daughter named Orianna, ① whom he loved more than anything else in the world. Though Orianna had incredible talent for dancing, she was deeply ② fascinated by the champions of the League of Legends. ​Orianna and The Ball now fight as Champions in the League of Legends. She tries in earnest to fit in with those around her. However, no matter how hard she tries, Orianna can never be human and there is always something unnerving and alien about her. Though she attempts social interaction with other champions in the League of Legends, there are few who can get past her exotic nature. To many, it’s as if there’s nothing inside that Orianna is just a soulless clockwork shell—a dangerous and deadly one at that. However, all along she remains the perfect daughter in her father’s eyes.​

 강조구문은 It is that을 제거하면 잠시 어순이 바뀔 뿐 완전한 문장이므로 강조의 형식을 제거해도 괜찮다. 한편 가주어, 진주어는 It is that을 제거하면 불완전한 문장이 되므로 It is that을 제거할 수 없다.

[본문 해석]

 

옛날 옛적에 오리아나라는 소녀가 살았다. 그녀는 필트오버 사람 코린 레벡의 딸이었으며 어렸을 때부터 아버지의 사랑을 듬뿍 받고 자랐다. 오리아나는 매우 아름다웠고 춤 솜씨도 무척 뛰어났다. 그러나 그녀가 정말로 원했던 것은 아름다움도, 춤 솜씨도 아니었다. 그녀의 단 한 가지 소망은 리그 오브 레전드의 전사들처럼 막강한 챔피언이 되는 것이었다.

 

그러나 온실 속의 화초처럼 자라왔던 오리아나에게 혹독한 전투 훈련은 견디기 어려운 것이었다. 챔피언이 되기 위해 갖은 수를 다 써보았지만 시원치 않았던 오리아나는 급기야 무모하고 불필요한 모험을 벌이게 되었다. 어떤 모험이었는지 설명하지 않는 편이 좋겠다. 그저 그 끝이 매우 끔찍하고, 비극적이었다는 것만 기록하면 될 것이다. 코린 레벡의 딸 오리아나는 창창한 어린 나이에 죽음을 맞이했다.

딸의 죽음은 레벡의 삶에 커다란 공백을 만들었다. 너무 괴로워서 견딜 수 없었던 그는 리그에 참가하고 싶다는 딸의 꿈을 대신 이뤄줄 존재를 만들어내기로 마음먹었다. 그리고 자신이 만든 살상용 시계태엽 기계에 딸의 이름을 붙여주었다. 코린은 오리아나를 더 강하게 만들고 그녀의 곁을 언제나 지켜줄 수 있는 구체 모양의 무기도 하나 만들었다. 공생체에 가까운 이 구체는 오리아나의 몸과는 달리 시계태엽으로 움직이지 않는다. 대신 마법기계공학이 적용된 전기의 힘을 에너지원으로 삼고 있다.

오리아나와 구체는 리그 오브 레전드에서 종종 기존 가치관에 어긋나는 방식으로 행동한다. 오리아나는 주변 사람들과 어울리기 위해 애를 쓰지만 아무리 열심히 노력해도 결코 인간이 될 수는 없다. 그래서일까? 오리아나에게선 뭔가 어색하고 기묘한 분위기가 풍긴다. 리그 오브 레전드의 다른 챔피언과 친하게 지내려 해도 오리아나의 특이한 본성을 자연스럽게 받아들여 그녀와 어울릴 수 있는 사람은 많지 않다. 이렇듯 다른 이들의 눈에는 속이 텅 비고 영혼이 없는 위험한 살인 태엽 인형일 뿐이지만, 아버지의 눈에 오리아나는 어디까지나 완벽한 딸이다.
