Former Lineage3 developers are guilty

April 17th, 2012

Supreme Court confirm the original verdict that former Lineage3 Development Team members’ suspicion of leaking Lineage3 Trade secret on the 16th of April. The suit was leaded by the prosecution not by NCSoft.

The prosecution appealed against the decision of the court of first instance that some are acquitted in June, 2009. High Court judged them guilty again and some of them received tougher punishment than the court of first instance.

Supreme Court only confirms the case is guilty or not. The former head of department was sentenced to one and half year in prison with 2 years of probation. The former team manager of development was found not guilty at the court of first instance, but sentenced 8 months in prison with 2 years of probation at High Court. Some of team members was fined US$6,100~8,800.

A person from NCSoft said “Leaking trade secret is the important issue of life or death to the company. The judgment from Supreme Court could establish a good precedent to people who work at IT companies where resignation and changing jobs are common depends on the success of the project.”

Beside of the prosecution’s suit, the civil case for damages leaded by NCSoft is waited for the court’s ruling. NCSoft claim damages of US 5.7 million against Bluehole Studios, the developer of TERA. NCsoft won the original trial, but Bluehole Studio won the second trial.

TERA Got Sued by NCsoft in the U.S.

January 26th, 2012

TERA at E3 2011

NCsoft and its North American corporation NC Interactive have submitted a case to a southern district court in New York province, the U.S.  for a prohibition of launching <TERA> in the U.S. as well as return of confidential information and a compensation claim on the 9th of January; the defendants of the case are Bluehole Studio and En Mass Entertainment, respectively the developer and the North American publisher of MMORPG <TERA>.

NCsoft has asserted that Bluehole Studio has violated the copyright on MMORPG <Lineage 3> which used to be ceased for a while as Bluehole Studio leaked core technology of it, also stating violation of business secrets, violation of Non Disclosure Agreement(NDA), unfair competition, and other reasons.

To help you understand this situation, NCsoft and Bluehole’s ill-fated relationship has developed since last 2007.

In 2007, NCsoft requested a police investigation over Bluehole for leakage of the business secrets of <Lineage 3> in Korea. In August 2008, it sued Bluehole for that <TERA> derived from its then next generation MMORPG and claimed US$5.8M for damage. In December of the same year, the prosecution charged five ex-<Lineage 3> developers for the leaked secrets.

In 2010, the Korean court ruled that the defendant’s firm is not guilty but the five are guilty.

But <TERA> in the U.S. has not even launched yet. Then why would NCsoft sue them there, not in Japan where the commercial service already started off? And why now?

Most of the industry officials deem that NCsoft is trying to interrupt the NA server which is scheduled to be open on May 1. Moreover, it’s drawing the industry’s attention as the lawsuit is taking place while a controversy over protecting copyrights, SOPA and PIPA for examples, is going on in the U.S. today.

Both companies are unforthcoming about the situation. “We are looking for a law firm in NA and will announce our official stance as soon as we find one,” said a Bluehole official. “Take this lawsuit as prolongation of the lawsuit in Korea,” said a NCsoft official.

Japanese TERA to Shrink to a Third

December 28th, 2011

[Update: Clarified a few terms to prevent any possible misunderstanding.]

The number of Japanese <TERA>’s server is going to shrink to a third.

NHN Japan announced it yesterday at the official site and the server consolidation will take place on January 5. <TERA> in Japan has just started publishing its commercial service 5 months ago.

During the OBT, <TERA> had shown 48,000 concurrent users(CCU) which was a remarkable number in the market. Its cute female race Elin was especially so popular that the fans created so many UCCs about her.

However its expensive monthly subscription of US$38.50, the advent of bot-program, and frequent bugs after a recent all-out update have beset itself seriously.

To grasp its players tight, NHN Japan increased free time for new players from 20 to 40 hours while holding an event that reduces cooltime of dungeons to half with double chance for valuable items.

NHN Japan said “Although the CCU has been decreased from the initial start it is now more stable than we expected. The server consolidation is to promote better cooperative play.”

<TERA> in Korea also had combined its servers last May after its OBT in January of the same year.

TERA Is Already AAA Game in Europe

September 14th, 2011

“Making <TERA> AAA game in Europe is our goal,” said Christian Szymanski the director of marketing of Frogster.

We interviewed him over <TERA> in Europe. It is summarized from the full story at here.

How is <TERA> going in Europe?

Very positive. People heard about that we are publishing it to Europe keep asking us when its official launch is. It is almost proud to be its local publisher in Europe.

What features of <TERA> do you promote for marketing?

Briefly 4 features. First of all is obviously battle. Its non targetting battle system is an unique characteristic of <TERA>.

Second is stunning graphics powered by Unreal engine 3. From a broad plain to a boiling volcanic region, there are so many fields and dungeons with great musics and elements to Western gamers’ taste.

Third is politics system. The opportunity to become a lord of a region is a very attractive motivation, and this will be eventually connected with PvP.

Lastly, as it is a MMORPG, beating down giant monsters.

Which of them do you think will be the most popular in Europe?

I guess the first one, action. European gamers like console games. <TERA>’s awesome action will attract console gamers to MMORPG.

Is there any difference between Korean version and European version?

No much since we are very satisfied with the current version. Maybe we can modify or add some quests.

How are MMORPGs doing in Europe?

It is a hard question since Europe market consists of multiple markets. For Germany, PC games and RPGs are leading the market but console games are leading English market. So far, marketing MMORPG in Europe is not so easy.

However the MMORPG market is gradually growing. More gamers subscribe the monthly accounts. There are also some gamers moving over to PC games and online games since no new console platforms are introduced yet. I believe it is a good time for <TERA>.

What is your rival games?

<Guild Wars 2> and <Star Wars Online> will likely be out at the similar time. But we have faith in <TERA>. As <TERA> features many unique systems, we will focus on them.
