The Battle of Online Baseball Games

April 12th, 2012

CJ E&M, NCsoft and Nexon will compete in baseball game genre.

Nexon declares developing an online baseball game based on the real world first. Nexon also showed its aggressive move toward baseball genre by announcing the online baseball game development plan with 2K Sports in May, 2011 and starting to sponsor one of Korean professional baseball teams – Lotte Giants.

NCsoft made a contract with EA to publish ‘MVP Baseball Online’. The game is developed by EA Korea Seoul Studio. Because NCsoft found 9th professional baseball team ‘NC Dinosaur’, the company is known to give wholehearted support to its baseball game.

CJ E&M also revealed ‘MAGU The Real’, a baseball game by Unreal Engine 3. The game emphasizes its reality by adopting the real data from Korean professional baseball league.

The interesting issue is that a rival, ‘MLB 2K’ and ‘MVP Baseball’, will compete with each other again in Korea. Since 2K Sports acquired exclusive MLB license in 2006, ‘MVP Baseball’ has not released the latest version since 2005. However the exclusive contract is expired in 2012, ‘MVP Baseball’ could get MLB license as well.

NC Dinosaur is a team based on Changwon regionally, while Lotte Giants, which is sponsored by Nexon, is based on Busan. Two teams are doomed to become a rival since Changwon and Busan is very close. We expect that it is not far away two biggest online game companies in Korea will fight each other at baseball stadiums.

We cannot under estimate CJ E&M’s ‘MAGU The Real’ because CJ E&M is the current leader in Korean online baseball game market with ‘MaguMagu’.

‘MAGU The Real’ is expected to be available in late 2012, while ‘2K Baseball Online’ is scheduled for 2013. There is nothing to be known about ‘MVP Baseball Online’ releasing schedule. We expect it to be available 2013 as well.

Common things among 3 different online baseball games are that they all emphasize its reality as well as all of them will be likely to have KBO(Korean Baseball Organization) license.

Return of Legendary RPG, The War of Genesis 4

January 18th, 2012

Before I start talking about this game, I need to explain what this game means to Korean gamers and market first.

<The War of Genesis>(<WG>) series has been one of the best and most famous Korean RPG ever. Its developer, Softmax, introduced its first series in December 1995 and released its 6th and last title, <WG3:Part 2>, in December 2000, featuring high quality graphics and sounds, impressive characters, awesome skill effects, various strategics, top voice actors and profound story.

The games had set an unprecedented record of 700,000 sales as a sole game series and had brought a golden age to the developer.

HyungTae Kim, currently AD of <Blade & Soul> of NCsoft, made a name for himself with his unique characters as a character artist of <WG3>.

After 12 years, Softmax finally revealed the development of a MMORPG <WG4: Spiral Genesis>. However the news is just not utterly welcome because Softmax had always said “We do not want to develop <WG4> or remake the series because they are our last resorts.”

YunKyu Choi the director of Softmax said “Blizzard did a good job on melting history and content of <Warcraft> into <World of Warcraft>. I believe <WG> series got some history and world of its own. So we are putting a lot of effort into conveying our own feelings and worlds through keeping the characteristic content and history of the game, evading simple grinding and level-up.”

Softmax has developed RPG <Magna Carta> and <Magna Carta 2>, MMORPG <Talesweaver>, and MOTPS <SD Gundam Capsule Fighters> for last decade.

Power Rangers Online Revealed for Upcoming CBT

October 28th, 2011

Ntreev Soft revealed its action MORPG <Power Rangers Online> today and announced its first CBT taking place on November 3 at the production report in Seoul.

<Power Rangers Online> is a 8-directions-side-scrolling action MORPG grounded on Japanese TV drama series <Power Rangers>. Its story is based on <Power Rangers Magic Force> aired in Korea 2006.

Watch the video first. :)

Click to watch the play video.

As you can see the play video linked above, only red, yellow, and pink rangers are available during the CBT for now. They fight as ordinary citizen at the beginning of each game and will transform into power rangers later. The ordinary citizen will just punch and kick. Special abilities are only available after the transformation.

The players will start the game at the beginner town ‘Magic Island’ and continue to the main stage headquarter.

Just like the characters, story, etc., enemy bosses are also from the original series. 14 bosses are awaiting the testers during the first CBT. As you might expect the enlarged bosses at the very end of the battle just like the TV series, they of course get enlarged when they get killed once. Then the players will be granted a new combination ability that can only be activated with other players to distroy the enemy. Check it out at the end of the video.

While casting the super awesome combination ability, the players are to hit keyboard as many as they can for next 10 seconds. The one who hit the most will be chosen as MVP and be rewarded a box with random epic items.
